「Urushi × Hinoki」
From June 12-14, 2024, the Ahare Space Project participated in 3 Days of Design held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In this exhibition, we collaborated with TSUYAMA FURNITURE from Okayama Prefecture, which produces products using traditional Japanese materials such as hinoki (cypress) and urushi (lacquer), and Kyoto's Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi Store. Hinoki and urushi are materials deeply familiar to Japanese people, having been used in traditional architecture and crafts, including temples and shrines. Hinoki has strong ties to Japanese forestry, and during the rapid economic growth of the 1960s, hinoki and cedar trees were widely planted across the country. However, with modernization, the use of these materials has decreased, and they are no longer as familiar to the Japanese public. Revisiting these challenges facing Japan's resources, we reexamined the inherent qualities of these materials, presenting living furniture and kitchen tools that highlight the grain and texture of the wood, allowing for the enjoyment of their aging process.
At ASP, we designed a fragrant space to enhance the experience of these products, highlighting the beauty of Japanese materials and craftsmanship.
